Sammy Andrews is one of the most highly respected stock contractors in all of rodeo. He’s a member of the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame, has been named Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association Stock Contractor of the Year and has been honored by the Texas State Legislature for his contributions to the great sport of rodeo.
Andrews grew up in rodeo, taking his first steps in the Fort Worth Coliseum. His favorite job as a kid was breaking the colts that were raised on the family ranch. He rode bareback horses and bull dogged in college and when he got out, he made his way into stock contracting. From his beginnings as a contractor for amateur rodeos, he built a business and a reputation second to none in the rodeo business.
Stock contractor Sammy Andrews, a third-generation rodeo stock contractor, was born into rodeo. He’s been involved in ranch and rodeo since before he can remember. And he can’t imagine doing anything else. Read about his incredible career in rodeo here: https://westernlivingjournal.com/rodeo-legend-sammy-andrews-looking-back-on-a-rodeo-legacy/
Over the course of his career, Andrews has raised and hauled a great number of the best bucking horses. But there was one that stood out as “most memorable.”
“He was a registered quarter horse that my friend was using for a roping horse,” Andrews went on to say. “But the horse had bucked the guy’s kid off twice and so the guy was selling him. In fact, he thought he had him sold. The buyer had been roping on him all day and they were going to rope just one more steer.”
It was that one more steer that sent the roan quarter horse to live life on the Andrews ranch as a National Finals Rodeo bucking bronc.
“They went to rope the steer and that horse bobbed his head, bucked off the rider and went right over the fence. They had to chase him down,” Andrews said with a laugh. “My friend caught the horse and looked back. All he could see was a trail of dust from the buyer’s truck racing down the road. That’s when my friend called me and said, ‘I got you a horse. I’m bringing him to you.’ And that’s how we came by Roany Wiggles.”
That roping horse turned bucking bronc went on to become one of the top bucking horses in the PRCA. Roany Wiggles was a National Finals Rodeo horse and was named Texas Circuit Horse of the Year in 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000.
“Roany Wiggles was a blue roan that stood 16 hands. He was the perfect bucking horse. He stood in the chute good and there were no cheap shots with him,” Andrews told about the horse the cowboys wanted to draw. “Cowboys would jump at the chance to try and get on him. They loved him.”
“That horse really got in the air when he bucked and he had lots of kick,” continued Andrews about the horse’s athletic ability. “He went to the NFR and was in the 10th round, the tv round, several times. He was also chosen as Texas Circuit Horse of the Year multiple years.”
Roany Wiggles was an easy horse to get along with and Andrews grew rather fond of his quarter horse that one of his best bucking broncs.
“He was a big old pet. That horse hung out in the pasture with the riding horses and he’d come right up to you. He was easy to catch and he liked people.”
